Students turn out excellent performances at district s/e festival
Clare High School hosted the annual District IX Solo and Ensemble Festival this past Saturday, February 2. Thirty events from Clare High School performed at the festival. All students received high marks and excellent comments from adjudicators. State qualifiers are:

State Solo/Ensemble is Saturday, March 24 at Manistee High School. After school appointments with Mrs. Sapienza and Mr. Rabenold are available Monday-Friday.
The High School Jazz Ensemble took home 2nd Runner-Up, Outstanding Band and 2nd Runner-Up, Outstanding Trombone Section at this year's Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend.
Clare Middle School Students Receive High Scores at Solo and Ensemble Festival
On Saturday, December 3, forty Clare Middle School students traveled to Beaverton to perform at Solo and Ensemble Festival. The festival is sponsored by Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association’s District IX.

The following students received a rating of II, the second highest rating, at competition: Josiah Bear, Violin solo; Victoria Hitchcock and Bailey Hubel, duet; Beth Moose and Alise Cronin, duet; Taylor Rucki and Bethanie Jones, duet; Ben Mellish, Trumpet solo; Kate Grove, Flute solo; Jacob Fair, Trumpet solo; Hannah David, Flute solo.
Students began rehearsing after school in late October for festival. A special mention was given to eighth grade student Andrew Witter for receiving two A + marks for his snare drum solo in the categories of Precision and Rhythm. All students were well-prepared and received excellent comments from the adjudicators at festival.
Record Numbers of Students Attend Summer Music Camps
The final numbers are yet to be determined, but it looks as though roughly thirty Clare students attended a summer music camp this year. Students enrolled in one or more of the following camps this year: Herter Music Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp or Camp Wolverine. Junior Jordan Hales received the Outstanding Camper Award at Camp Wolverine this summer. He will attend camp next year on a full scholarship.
Laura Mater Wins Audition for Michigan Youth Ensemble
Sophomore Laura Mater (Euphonium) auditioned and won a position in the 2011-2012 Michigan Youth Ensemble. The Michigan Youth Band is an academic year-long ensemble that rehearses on the campus of the University of Michigan. The members of the band are coached and conducted by faculty and students on campus. The Youth Ensembles are in their sixty-first season. Two Students Receive Scholarships to Attend 4-year Institutions for Music
Enos Hershberger (Trumpet, Guitar) and T.J. Owens (Tenor Saxophone) were accepted to music programs for fall 2011. Enos will be attending Olivet Nazerene University in Illinois and T.J. will be attending Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan. Both students received large scholarships from their university for their talent. T.J. Owens also received the Clare Public Schools Doherty Scholarship for the Performing Arts.
Justin Miller, Class of 2010, to Attend Olivet for Music Composition
Justin Miller has been accepted to Olivet-Nazarene University in Illinois to study Music Composition. Justin plays Alto Saxophone and was a member of the Clare Marching Pioneers, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. Justin also took Advanced Music Methods/Practice while in high school, which primarily focuses on the study of Music Theory/History.
